Why does every app lately seem obsessed with implementing a visual dashboard with graphs and charts and things which nobody asked for ever? I’m all for #datavis, but why not make it available on-demand rather than forcing everyone to wait for, and be confronted by graphical charts every... stevesawczyn.micro.blog

@SteveSawczyn oh man, were you listening in on a meeting I had a few weeks ago where I went on a similar rant? Was/still am trying to convince my "executive sponsor" to let me take infographs out of one of our site's dashboards, and make them into a user-configurable page that they (the user) enables IF they want it.

@ptrck Oh my, please keep fighting that good fight. I don't know if your sponsor would care -- sometimes they do and sometimes they don't -- but there are a lot of accessibility issues with infographics. I could go on and on but in short, people using screen readers can't read anything they contain, people with low-vision might not be able to either sinfce things might not magnify well, any content that might need to be looked up to be better understood -- what does this word mean? -- can't be because you can't copy from the graphic and this impacts folks with cognitive impairments/learning disabilities. And of course outside of accessibility, there's still the user choice thing. :)

@SteveSawczyn Agreed 100% with this! since I’ve never had sight, complex visual charts are hard for me to imagine. It’s difficult for me to understand what data is being shown and how. Even the audio graphs that Apple uses, I mean they’re great, and they work, but what value am I really getting out of them? Instead of showing me a graph of my sleep cycle for the last week, I wish that I could just have a list of times that I spent sleeping, or a detailed list of how my heart rate or respiratory rate has changed during sleep. All the audiograph tells me is that my heart increased and decreased a bunch of times but it doesn’t tell me how high or low it was.

@SteveSawczyn Absolutely. Inclusivity and accessibility are my two main drivers for the argument so, wish me luck! Appreciate your perspective.
