Uh-oh, a new lists app, Listy, has entered onto my scene. It has potential to take the cake with its clean design, category-specific interface/details, ability to add brief notes, attractive pricing, and fun extras like sharing an image of list items. Via @davidpierce@mastodon.social on Installer.

A grid of 12 movie posters with titles and release times, showcasing films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” under the header “Oscars 2024.” App promotion “Made with Listy” below.

@jarrod I’m reminded that Sequel is also excellent and has a nifty Magic Lookup function and Trakt syncing. Oh, the embarrassment of riches. I’ve just been using Reminders lists, but would prefer something more visual and purposeful.

@jarrod

the embarrassment of riches.

This is so true for tracking apps (movies and TV shows). I also love that everyone offers syncing via Trakt. The only thing no app does well is interactive widgets. FilmNoir was the first one to offer that, but it still has some glitches. Does Sequel now offer this?

@jarrod I have Listy and Sequal subscriptions because of course I do. Sequal is what I use for TV and movies though because of the notifications and searchable database. I use Listy for my app shopping list.

@jarrod Even though Sequel is a bit more full-featured, I think I’m going to give Listy a go. It’s less expensive, includes family sharing, allows all kinds of lists instead of just media ones, and has a less busy interface. Plus, I already use TV Forecast for syncing things I’m currently watching with Trakt.

@pratik I’m not sure about Sequel cause I don’t have it’s subscription, but they do advertise ’Advanced Widgets’. Might be a good question for @amerpie. Listy doesn’t have them, though that would be cool.

Menu screen listing features for an app upgrade, including "Edit Completion Dates," "Advanced Widgets," "Time to Beat," and "Unlimited Collections." A button labeled "Upgrade Now" is shown, priced at $19.99 per year.

@jarrod Sequel has widgets for countdown to a show, watch next in queue, search/quick access to a particular series, “out now”, and “coming soon.” I think you have to have the plus or pro subscription to use them.

@jarrod I have a specific need (interactive) to mark items on my to-watch list as Watched without opening the app. BTW check out iTV. The annual subscription is a steal.

@jarrod I forgot about TV Forecast. I see that it now has interactive widgets. Can you let me know how they work? I can’t check it out unless I subscribe. Also, have you checked out TV Time?

@jarrod @pratik The widgets do countdown until a movie is released or a show starts, watch next queue, quick access to search your library, see items releasing soon

@pratik Ooh I’m a sucker for stats. I love how Trakt works like an RSS or email backend so you can try out all the apps with your actual data.

@dvdlite Can we mark episodes as watched via the widget? @jarrod

@pratik Would you look at that! TV Forecast does have an interactive widget. But just a small one, and you either choose a specific show or have automatically populate one. So you could have multiple of the widgets for your current shows with a little manual effort. You tap the small checkmark to mark the episode as watched. I’ve seen TV Time but the design doesn’t gel with me.

@jarrod But yeah, just one tv show on the widget doesn't work for me since we watch multiple ones. FilmNoir has the perfect widget for me but I don't like the UX. They had figured it out but that was disabled after an update few months ago. I think some technical issues is making it a problem to implement.

@jarrod friendly note that you’re spelling Sequel wrong a few times here (I hope this is useful and not a bummer to hear)

@pratik How many shows do you watch at once? You could set up a page with a handful of the small widgets and just change one’s source when you finish a show. Not super elegant, but would work. I’ll submit some feedback that larger interactive widgets are desired.

@jarrod It depends. Right now, it's Fall so plenty of network shows are playing. Usually it's never more than a couple of hours per day even on the weekend.

@jarrod if nothing else, the Trakt app widget is not bad

A calendar widget displaying TV show schedules for the next 14 days. It features posters and episode details for "Shrinking" (2x06), "The Irrational" (2x05), "Abbott Elementary" (4x06),
