Don’t have much to say about Post.news shutting down other than what is already obvious to everyone. There’s no space in the social web for silos unless you’re Meta. Very similar problems to what I wrote about with App.net in my book.

@manton Or Google. I'm still surprised by the way in which people seem to exclude YouTube from this conversation.
I know what you mean, and of course I agree.
@SimonWoods That’s true. We sort of accept YouTube as more like infrastructure just because video is so hard to host at that scale. It’s a unique data silo with many of the same Meta-sized problems.
@manton Weren't they just a Mastodon instance? Or was the design similarities coincidental? Can they not transfer to another instance?
@pratik They were their own thing, not based on Mastodon. Apparently they don't even have export ready yet.
@manton Yes it's amazing to think how they've basically taken the role of all of the music video channels from before the era of mass internet, let alone the other smaller parts of our culture.
