Dateline July 17th 2023 and Twitter Cross Posting still seems to be working.

... meanwhile I have settled on some 'cross post' tactics ... tactics - definitely not 'strategy'!

@pratik I will ... just moving some domains around in parallel ... and then will write a longer post - but the key was to NOT have default cross post to Flickr and LinkedIN ... they are different places to the others ...

I still would prefer to have the rest with ability to cross post - but not as the default - and then use the Drafts app to selectively choose where and when as needed - but that doesn't seem to be an option now - and sadly not on the cards for the future.

@JohnPhilpin Well, you can do it via Drafts using @donnydavis's Action since it lets you uncheck places you don't want it to cross-post to. I like that way coz you don't forget to as compared to when you are doing it natively

@pratik yes - that IS what I am using - BUT - it requires me to always use it for posting.

So if i want to post only to microblog - I use Donny's world and uncheck - otherwise

'Everything' is going

'Everywhere' (except Flickr and LinkedIN)

'All At Once' 😂

@JohnPhilpin Yup, the temptation to post from the web or via the app is pretty strong. Using Drafts ALL THE TIME should be part of muscle memory. I wish someone could disable the posting feature in my apps.

@pratik @JohnPhilpin hope I didn’t miss something from the convo. It’s now possible to manage cross posting on all of the platforms.

The official app was just updated a few days ago. When making a new post, select the gear icon, for posting options, and it will allow you to adjust the cross posting options.

On the web if you select the three dot menu over the top right of the text box then you can show the cross posting options, along with categories, etc.

Hope that helps. 🙂

@donnydavis @pratik

Yes and … it means that you can enable cross posting on those places you wish to cross post to and by default they will cross post.

The post adjustment feature allows you to switch off posting to any of those.

If you forget to adjust for a post .. it goes everywhere.

I want the default to be that they do not cross post … and at a post level switch on to cross post to specific places ….

That way if you forget to adjust for a post … it doesn’t go everywhere.

I have raised this before and the answer is a combination of

1) it doesn’t work that way (I know .. that’s why I’m raising it 🤪).

2) what I want is not possible / too hard.

3) this isn’t what cross posting is about and I am pushing microblog too far.

4) that makes it complicated.

ONWARDS

@JohnPhilpin I agree with you that the default should change_ to opt in_ instead of the current opt-out. That would also prevent external feeds (Letterboxd, etc.) that are linked to Micro.blog from being cross-posted.

To be fair, I think @manton has mentioned that now that the cross-posting options are on the web and the app, he will think whether the default behavior should change.

What I was emphasizing is that, if you use @donnydavis action and post everything via Drafts (don't use Mb's official Compose button), then you get a more obvious way (hence remember) to un-select places to cross-post.

@donnydavis Separate but related Q about your Drafts action. Any reason why it creates a tag with the URL path for everything we publish? I can somewhat understand creating a tag for the domain, but for each URL path adds a lot of clutter. @JohnPhilpin

@pratik I think to provide a canonical reference so you can find it and update it ... And the system can connect the dots.

@JohnPhilpin Can you say more? As to how it helps within Drafts?

@pratik if you use the @donnydavis shortcut - it is not just about publishing once and being done - but also about updating posts once they are published.

Back in May I published a selection of posts through Donny's action.

They are here.

(Side note - writing this reminds me I need to clean them up), but the fact is I can open any of the posts up in Drafts - make edits and republish.

If I remove the unique identifier in Drafts it will publish a new post. But leaving it in, means that the action know that it is an update to an existing post.

Does that help?

@pratik you just raised a question in my head. I thought that external posts like Lettrboxd were excluded from the cross posting scheme? Now I need to go find a film to post and check.

@JohnPhilpin Oh wait! So you can edit your published posts via Drafts if we use @donnydavis’s Action? 🤯 How did I not know that?

Is there a way to hide those individual post tags from the sidebar?

Hey guys. Sorry for the late reply.

@JohnPhilpin ah, gotcha. Yeah, I totally misunderstood your initial issue. 🤦🏼‍♂️ I have gone back and forth myself about how I think the cross posting options should work. I actually considered leaving the off by default in the Action, but then decided to keep the behavior the same as on micro.blog itself. I am open to adjusting this in the action if folks think that it would be worth it.

@pratik John already answered, but yeah, the tags are used in the action to allow for updating posts. I actually regret this setup now, as the tags add a bit of clutter. And if you accidentally delete one, then it breaks the functionality of the action. It was the easiest way that I could do what I wanted at the time. I’ve been looking in to alternative options and think that I found a way that I can store that data as a file in the app directory. Then it wouldn’t require the tags and avoid breaking functionality if the tags are deleted. Then you can use your own tags to organize how you want.

@JohnPhilpin every time I discover something new in Drafts, I'm like, that's awesome and then forget about it when I learn something else new in Drafts. But where do you hide 'published'?

@donnydavis Now that I understand it, it's a great feature and my only trouble is with the clutter which as per John's suggestion, I can avoid. But if you do figure out that alternative solution, let me know.

So please enlighten me on how this editing works. You go back to the published note in Drafts, make changes, and then re-publish using the same action?

@pratik yes - exactly that

Hiding is done in workgroup set up .. use -published .. if memory serves

@donnydavis yeah to solve my problem it would need a microblog change

Neat idea to fix the tags

@pratik yeah, that’s basically it. After you’ve published a post, just open it again in Drafts, make changes and then post the changes. This also works with creating a draft post as well. You can create a draft post and then edit that post in Drafts at a later time and change the post status to published to actually publish the post.

Once you have posted it, it uses those tags to determine which blog that you used, so it won’t prompt for that again. You can also change the categories whenever you post changes.

@pratik error - sorry - not - … !

Eg

https://john.philpin.com/uploads/2023/deb866db56.jpg

When you set up a workspace you can choose which tags to include … OR NOT include … this one for example excludes all the MB posts and some others - so I can focus on ‘active drafts’

@pratik oh no. Sorry about the lack of transparency and knowledge sharing there. I’m horrible at documentation, but was thinking about trying to put together a page on my site that acts as a guide for all of the features.

Once I get done with some code cleanup and refactoring, I’m hoping that I can better handle those urls without needing the tags. 🙂
