I love the look and feel of tapbots Ivory app, but 15 bucks a year is a litte expensive no? help me justify yearly price here. Dont give me 3 starbucks coffee argument. My hesitation is purely against monthly/yearly subscripton based products. With micro it feels different coz it a host... supremus.micro.blog

@supremus I'm going to decide on a year-by-year basis. They've done great work in developing Ivory quickly, making it familiar and easy to use Mastodon. So my first-year subscription is just a nod to that aspect. For that reason, I think $15 or even $25 is a fair price.

@supremus I am using my micro.blog account and app to connect with people on Mastodon. It feels seamless. Don't want to have one more app and website to use.

@supremus so my problem with Ivory is that Tapbots have been receiving requests to do an app for an open platform for years, at least 5. But they’ve only done it now that Twitter’s killed their business. So it has nothing to do with supporting Mastodon, or the open web. It’s just bout making cash.

@Parag That's much better. I just have a separate Mastodon account because I am using it to replace my "professional" presence on Twitter. I will use it mostly to post things regarding work (and very little personal) I don't want them to find my Mb space so I can talk about them here LOL @supremus

@fabio I mean it is a business and they gotta pay employees, so I am not too concerned abt it. As a business you choose the best avenues that brings you cash and profitability. Now that cash & profitability has gone, they have to pivot.

@supremus @pratik I’m on the trial and I’ll probably get it for a year too. I like that it is easier to find people. Of course, I’ll also pay for instance upkeep as well.

@supremus ah absolutely, it is a business, no doubt. I’d have a few hundred words to write about all this. All I’m saying is that they shouldn’t be seen as taking up the flag of the open web with the launch of this new app. They only switched from Twitter when they were literally booted.

@supremus This is more an explanation of how I understand the pricing of Ivory came to be, based on following the developers on Mastodon.

My understanding is that Tweetbot, which was available for a $6.99 annual subscription from my memory, was a large part of Tapbots income. When Elon Musk pulled the plug on third party Twitter apps, Paul & Matt (of Tapbots) felt it. Ivory was not planned to be released so early as there are still many features missing. Users on Mastodon of the alpha/beta were telling Tapbots to go ahead and release the app as it was. They were willing to pay for it. They also said that they thought that Tweetbot's fee was too low. Paul published what they were thinking to charge (what you see now) based as I understood it on the feedback that he had been receiving on Madtodon, and the feedback was overwhelmingly supportive of the prices. For now the $25 is just if you want to say a big thank you. You get nothing special at that price.

Development has been swift, Tapbots have done well in getting the app out there in a short time, and they have a faithful following built up upon years of software development (especially Tweetbot). I'm paying for this year, supporting the developers, and keeping my eye on other apps like Ice Cubes which is free (tips appreciated).

@supremus Go to "discover" page on micro.blog, click on the magnifying glass and type the mastodon address such as "@supremus@mastodon.world" . It will bring up that user with an option to follow. Once followed, their mastodon toots will appear in your micro.blog timeline and you can reply from MB. Can't believe that "I" am explaining this to a techie. :)

@crossingthethreshold I paid without hesitation, been a Tweetbot user since the early days. It's nice get a familiar UI for Mastodon.

@supremus Mona! It's a one time-purchase. If you have the Spring app for twitter it's going to be discounted to $9 I think which will be unlimited on iPad, iPhone and Mac. If you don't have Spring it's you can purchase it for $10 for one platform or, I think, $17 for all three. And honestly, having used Spring on Twitter and Mona for the past month, I think it's the better app anyway. Ivory is really nice but Mona is it's equal in visual design with more features.

I'd been reading complaints for months about Tweetbot's lack of updates and find it kinda funny that people seem to have forgotten that... or forgiven it.

I actually LOL-ed. Maybe Mb has made you a techie too. BTW do you follow people on Mastodon on the Micro.blog app? You might miss out on the posts they "boost," but that may be a good thing.

@fabio I agree. would have been nice to seem them proactively move to support Mastodon from what I'd read various places includenig app store reviews, they'd not been issuing regular updates for Tweetbot for the past year and a lot of folks were complaining that for a subscription app it didn't get enough attention.

@Denny What's Mona? I couldn't find any iOS app of that name (that made sense in regard to Mastodon). Do you have a link, or did I misunderstand you?

@holgerfrohloff It's a Mastodon app made by the maker of Spring, which was a Twitter client app. I should have maybe mentioned that it's currently in TestFlight so you won't find it on the App Store just yet. mastodon.social/@MonaApp

@cambridgeport90 I loved Metatext when I started using Mastodon. Unfortunately it’s no longer being developed since the developer is dealing with some health issues. No one (last I heard) has offered to take over

@cambridgeport90 Since I am a Micro.blog user — not Mastodon — I do not have free choice, yet. On iOS I am using Gluon by @vincent and on Mac I use the official Micro.blog app.
