By chance, we walked passed the Apple reseller yesterday. Took a look at the Watch Ultra and 14 Pro. Ultra looks terrible. It's real ugly. I did like the straps though. Shame my Watch is too small. Night mode is cool. Overall the Watch felt... cheap. Maybe because it was so light. Dashe... vincentritter.com

@vincent I still have to go down to the local one, and get a look at the real thing. But Iā€™ve found myself reading Ultra reviews. I do find them extremely expensive thoughā€¦

@maique thatā€™s another thing. Theyā€™re very expensive to buy and own. But what actual value do you get from this? My phone was expensive, but itā€™s not worth the price tag (in my opinion). They make them ā€œredundantā€ after a year because they know consumerism works. If they made timeless pieces, that last possibly decades and are unique, then thatā€™s another story.

@maique itā€™ll be interesting where it goes with the Ultra though. I think, at the moment, itā€™s just another watch to show off with. Ultra is the wrong name I think.

@vincent That's a tricky question. Value is very subjective.
I do find them expensive, but get value from them. The watch is harder to justify for me and, if totally honest, not worth it. The phone is way easier, I work with it, and most of my digital life now is also via the phone. The laptop goes unused for days.

I'm not on a yearly cycle as well. The last phone was the X, and before that a series 6. My last watch was a series 2. I became disillusioned with it, but also because it was really outdated, a ton of features are missing already.

Also, on that one, I broke the glass, and the cost to repair that was almost as high as a new one. So, for me, the sapphire glass on the Ultra might be worth part of the extra cost.

I'm not even considering the bling factor. It may be shallow, but bling is worth a lot for some. Watches have been traditionally used to show off, even more so on men, who are not big jewelry users. That alone would justify the cost for a lot of people.

I might even go back for a dive, and that would help shave a bit off the price. Of course the dive isn't free, so... hmmmm šŸ¤£

@maique Well said. I've never understood complaints about people who are spending their own money. As you said, value is subjective. I used to upgrade my iPhone every year for the camera but then I skipped iPhone 12 and currently have no plans to get the 14 but I'm still as enthusiatic about photography. On the other hand, I never had any urge for fancy cars. My Toyota Prius is now ten years old but I don't judge people who lease a new car every three years. To each their own. @vincent

@pratik @maique my post was more on being ā€œassociatedā€ with a certain crowd. To each their own for sure šŸ‘ Iā€™m in a funny mood and different brain wave today.

@vincent @maique How do we know someone is "associated" with a certain crowd? Are all BMW/Tesla owners assholes? Maybe they're just buying it because they think it's a better car.

@maique btw, appreciate your reply on this. I know my comments were a little weird over the weekend. You make good points for sure! And it's nice it's not about bling for you. Sometimes I should not say anything. I've done the one thing I don't want to, which is to contribute nothing valuable. Perhaps it's just me becoming frustrated at little things and perhaps largely Apple. What I need to do is to just let them go... because since when should I think about what other people decide to do and buy.

@vincent Donā€™t even have to mention it, I didnā€™t give it another thought. We all get frustrated, and Apple has been on your mind a lot. Itā€™s only natural, I guess, you deal with them in a way that most of us donā€™t. Itā€™s easier to see their shortcomings that way, I guess, their ā€œvalueā€ for us is totally differentšŸ™‚ Have a great week, and try not to let them mess up your mood, thatā€™s all I can suggest.

@vincent @maique Also, know that you're not alone with being confused by the behaviour of people with regard to consumerism. I've seen many people express themselves in much poorer ways than you did. šŸ‘
