@manton Indiebook Club needs some work so I would love to see Micro.blog try to develop a GoodReads alternative. There’s much clutter on there but it does a great job of tracking lists of books you have read, are reading, and have read. I also love the progress tracking in case you are wondering what features are needed. After that the social aspects take over. That is, which of your friends read it and how did they review it.
@pratik Thanks. I think my approach for now should be a series of small features around books, and then see if a more complete Goodreads alternative (that works with M.b) is built by others. And I'll just keep adding separate features that work well together in the meantime.
@manton Yup. That’s what I meant. Building a complete GoodReads alternative is a full-time job.
@manton this is awesome, and what I wish I could do with my bookshop shortcode.
Honestly, the only thing I'd want out of a "GoodReads Alternative" is an automatic /books page that organizes book posts by year. With just some basic microformats standards this should be very easy.
@jsonbecker Thanks! Maybe a Books page should be like Photos, easy to enable if there are any book posts.
@manton Do I understand correctly that this book search is just the link that you shared in your email for now? That there is no other way to access it while being tested?
@crossingthethreshold Yes, I haven’t linked it anywhere else in Micro.blog yet because I’m not sure where it will go.
@manton That’s pretty much exactly what I’d like to see, although I’d like both to get a little customization over time.
@manton Got it! Thank you. But I have used for a book that I have finished last night, and it worked fine - though I had to re-log into indiebookclub!
@jsonbecker Same here. As long as I can see books I've read, reading, and want to read on that page along with the date (for books read), it would be great. Other bells and whistles (limited) can be added later @manton
@pratik yup. Want to read, read with date, arranged in grid. Preferably separated by year.
Really happy to see this. This is a great feature! I didn't know about the Open Library before this.
@jsonbecker @manton This is great. The dream for me is definitely for this and the bookshop code to work together so my affiliate link ends up in there.
@manton So here is a thought for starters. In the same way that you have a camera icon for including photos on the micro.blog post area, include a book which somehow opens up the book search?
I’ve no idea how viable or easy that is to implement?
@cm @manton You can also see an example of their profiles. They're growing membership slowly, reminds me of the early days of Micro.blog.
@cm Thanks! This is a great find and looks promising. @simonwoods
