Nilay Patel in the intro to the latest Decoder:

But putting a bunch of computers in a data center and running them at full tilt is how basically everything works now. If you have a moral objection to AI based on climate concerns, you might have a moral objection to TikTok and YouTube as well, which are constantly ingesting and encoding millions of hours of video.

Sounds like a good discussion.

@manton I fully agree. That's one of the reasons, actually, why I am on micro.blog and try to avoid most of said services wherever possible. Too, touching that very issue:

@manton But AI computing has MUCH higher power requirements. I get his point, and I agree, but there are shades of grey here.

@plumey I agree about shades. It's good to see an in-depth discussion (haven't listened to the whole thing yet) because I think we often simplify it too far to the extremes.

@z428 Figured out the URL. Sorry about that underscore problem… Working on fixing it. (One work-around is to use Markdown for links since it avoids the auto-linking.)

@manton It's hard to imagine and believe Apple when they say their private cloud compute will be carbon neutral... isn't? cc @z428

@numericcitizen I’m curious about that. They seem to be rolling it out very cautiously.
