This is not what you’d expect to hear from a Meta executive, but it’s exactly right:

…you may one day end up leaving Threads, or, hopefully not, end up de-platformed. If that ever happens, you should be able to take your audience with you to another server. Being open can enable that.

@manton Wouldn’t be the first time they told an untruth. Lets wait for actions over words.

@manton We have the EU and data portability laws to thank on this, do we not?

@manton If their money’s where their mouth is, they’ll explore federating Instagram, too. 👀 But I’m not holding my breath.

@pratik @manton Agreed, I can’t believe any executive would say this, especially one from Meta. Is the sky about to fall?

@pimoore @manton A mans words aren’t as important as his deeds—even if he is a writer.

@Archimage @mcg @pimoore I'd take this is PR and nothing more. It's the same as saying "we care about your privacy" or "at meta, you own your content" or what not. I agree, wait and see.

@manton I'm hesitant to believe anything they say. Furthermore, it wouldn't be the first time they pull the rug on a core feature. But honestly, at this point I just want Twitter to die. And this might be the lesser of two evils.

@fourjuaneight @manton At this point Twitter collapsing is a distinct possibility; something we’d have thought implausible a year ago.

@pete To be honest, I have no idea how it hasn't already. Especially after this past weekend. Threads can only get better. That's not something I believe Twitter can do anymore.
