While watching the game last week, the announcers were clearly very skeptical of the red card. If the suspension had been reversed without Trump getting involved, I think it would’ve been the right call. But now the whole thing is tainted with the appearance of corruption. Not good. ⚽️
@manton I’m choosing to believe FIFA would have arrived at this conclusion even without Trump’s phone call… They bent the rules to let Ronaldo play even though he technically should have missed the first two games.
@manton Clear red card and no way the suspension would have been reversed. Corruption up to 100%, not only taint of it (no surprise with your president).
@manton they arrived at the correct decision via entirely incorrect, corrupt reasoning. surely it will only benefit the USMNT and not curse them to a disappointing showing as the final host nation remaining in the field
@pilch I wonder about it all backfiring through second-guessing everything too. Best for the players to completely put it out of their mind.
@manton so in terms of FIFA it’s business as usual. Honestly people are just mad because it’s so blatant, not that it happened.
@manton I believe I now stand as the only living soul on the planet who believes Balogun’s red card was deserved. I stand by that 100%. I would have made the same call as the referee, who had a better view than any of the announcers, and made the call after checking VAR.
@apoorplayer It’s not just you. I don’t actually feel that strongly about it… It seemed too harsh to me mostly because a single game is everything right now.
@manton Have we forgotten the whole spectacle of the FIFA Peace Prize? The dynamic pricing ticket gouging? This whole thing has been a codependent spectacle of corruption on all sides from the start.
