Lately I have been taking my Apple Watch off and leaving it off. There is a certain weight to it, not just in the physical sense, that has been more noticeable to me than usual.

I do like wearing a watch though. What is your favorite non-smart watch?

@aa I wear my Amazon Essentials watch constantly. Features: displays the time of day. :-)

@aa I'm a big fan of Islander Watches. Amazing build quality for reasonable prices.

@aa I didn't wear a watch (unless traveling) until I got an Apple Watch. I would probably skip wearing a watch if I didn't use an Apple Watch

@aa I have a silly swatch watch I love to wear during the summer as it weights almost nothing and looks fun.

@alexink I forgot about Swatch! Had one years ago, lost track of it through a few moves though.

@aa They're just fun watches and are great for summer time. Find your inner child, go buy one.

@aa I’m partial to my Citizen eco-drive. Keeps time (and date), as long as you’re in some light daily.

@aa I’m not really a watch person but I recently got a Casio Illuminator digital watch ($20!) that I’ve been wearing just for the anachronistic fun of it.

@aa I can’t decide on one. So many are so fun, the Apple Watch stays behind half the time.

@jabel I like watches with hands, though they're all electronic on the inside now. I wonder if a person can still buy a non-luxury-brand mechanical watch? Probably not. I remember having a cheap "self-winding" one (1970s maybe?) that didn't quite work as advertised; I had to flail my arm around from time to time to keep it wound. @aa

@JohnBrady Orient watch co. makes a good self winding watch at an affordable price. Look for a watch with a "reserve" (usually in hours) which is how long the watch will keep operating with no movement. Hamilton self winding watches are more expensive but they make some with reserve capacity measured in days.

@JohnBrady The best thing about my Casio digital watch is that I have my evening tea timer preprogrammed and always ready to go.

@jabel @JohnBrady @bradenslen @aa I deliberately stopped wearing my Apple Watch in January and recently bought a field watch from Berny to wear on weekends. A Chinese brand but uses a Japanese movement inside. Prices are reasonable.

@jabel I've had several of the Casio digitals; I think they were my standard watch until I stopped wearing watches because I could check the time on my phone (and now I'm back to watches). As I remember, on some of them the strap and casing were one piece of molded plastic, so if you had a problem with the strap the whole watch was shot. I hope yours is a notch fancier than that! For my tea, I use the stove timer, since that's where I'm making the tea.

@JohnBrady Now that I look at it, mine might also be a single piece of molded plastic. I'd have to tinker to make sure. Since it's cheap, it probably is.

@jabel Casio is such a classic brand, had a digital one when I was younger that I really enjoyed. Also had a Timex, another classic, I think. Can't beat that $20 price point!

@odd Citizen has some great looking watches! Eco-drive meaning it grabs the power it needs from daylight?

@aa I believe everyone shpuld own one nice watch. I prefer mechanical or automatic watches, which are fully analog and require no batteries. A really good one for the price is Orient Bambino. If you’re willing to pay a little more, Hamilton’s Khaki mechanical or automatic models are probably the best you can get without going into luxury watches.

@aa Well, it has a battery that gets charged from sunlight and indoor lighting, and it draws from that if I have understood correctly. The watch did stop once, in the winter when I didn’t use much lighting, other than that, it’s been fine. Right now, I’m back to my Apple Watch for a while, because I’m monitoring my health. But I think I will use my Citizen again when I see the results I need.

@aa Yes, it does. When my Apple Watch dies, I'm going back to my Citizen EcoDrive, which I keep under the light on my desk to keep the battery charged.

@aa I have a Laco automatic (watch, not gun, for anyone seeing this on the timeline out of context) that is too nice to wear hiking but too nice not to wear, if you see what I mean, so I just wear it. The things were designed for pilots after all. I really wish I could wear my great-grandfather's pocket watch, but it would require wearing a vest too, and at that point it's kind of a whole lifestyle.

@pgkr @aa I bought a Hamilton Khaki automatic a week ago, because I wanted to stop wearing my AppleWatch. Actually, because I wanted to stop checking my AppleWatch frequently. And also, because I got tired of charging it all the time. I've loved having an analogue watch again.

@JohnBrady @dwalbert Update: A lot of jeans come with a watch pocket, including my own Wrangler jeans. (I assume almost all jeans try to imitate Levis; why else would they do this?). This is giving me ideas about watches...

@JohnBrady I have thought about that, but if I have to reach into my pocket to see what time it is, I already have a phone there. So I think I would save it for occasions where I could have the chain visible and ostentatiously draw it out and so on.
