I don’t believe anyone should own or run Twitter, Mastodon, or Bluesky. It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving for the problem of it being a company however, Jay Graber is the singular solution I trust.
@manton of all proposed solutions, protocols, ideas, whatever, AT Protocol seems the nicest and we’ll build. I know there is a lot to Activitypub, but it seem so unreachable for some reason..
@manton Isn’t that effectively what bluesky is? The company is effectively a UI wrapper for the protocol, but it’s open source
@manton Yay! Found you. So Mastodon. Here on bsky you can smell the danger like you can smell a fire at the neighbor’s house. I visited a couple of sites of what you might call infection yesterday. Not good.

@manton I’d like to agree with you but it is notable to me that even protocols can be usurped. Take the incredibly open world of email and SMTP, IMAP, etc. which Google has captured in Gmail. Just highlighting protocols by themselves do not guarantee open-ness.
