I know a $200 difference isn’t nothing, but if you’re already $800 in for the iPhone 17, I think almost everyone should spring for the iPhone Air. 12 GB of RAM instead of 8 GB. That is going to start mattering with on-device AI models. Having said that, I’m keeping last year’s phone for a while.

@manton Why pay more for less? Shorter battery life, fewer cameras, worse speakers… only a fool would buy one! For what it’s worth, I’m still using an iPhone 11 Pro, and wondering if I can wait another year.

@paulrobertlloyd Fewer cameras is a big downgrade, for sure. Personally, it’s not for me. But I do think if you keep your phone for multiple years, that RAM is going to help a lot.

@manton hard disagree. Standard iPhone has the bigger battery, better camera, physical SIM card option, better speakers, and by the look of the compare site better MagSafe charging. Air has its place, but it’s not going to take the standard phone’s spot for the every person.

@actuallyfinishing That’s fair. Thinking about the cameras, I would probably walk back my “almost everyone”…

@manton I think that’s where they’re going though. Air 2 might add the extra speaker, maybe a super fusion camera to cover extra things. But yeah, especially with them all having the same ProMotion display, the regular iPhone is the one to get. Also only 20 grams heavier.

@paulrobertlloyd @manton

> Why pay more for less?

Because some, like me, want less. (Yes, I currently run a 13 Mini. 😁)

That being said, I’m not buying a phone this year, heh. But would absolutely consider an Air if I where.

(Compared to the 17, I don’t love that the screen is bigger, though… But that’s a pro for a lot of people.)
