A high of 65F today in my area of the world. A good afternoon to train for this year's recumbent cycling BHAG: A Century Ride... 100 miles in 1 day.

That would break my personal record in 2019 of 89.32 miles.

77.2 miles (indoor and outdoor) thus far this season.

@paulcraig901 Cool! I’ve never ridden a recumbent bike but they look fun. I rode a century in 2018 before my local riding crew fell apart in 2019. I’m hoping to get back on the road more this year.

@jabel In 2019, I did Ragbrai on a normal road bike. All 470+ miles in 7 days. Vowed to NEVER do that again. Got COVID in 2020 and it annihilated my cardiovascular system. A recumbent trike solves the balance issues. Climbs are slower... but at least if I need to rest, I can lock the brakes and not fall over.

@paulcraig901 Wow, I’ve heard of Ragbrai—that’s serious business. I’m glad you’ve found a way to keep riding despite the health issues.

@paulcraig901 @jabel Yeah, that's beautiful riding weather! I've never ridden a recumbent but they do look fun. I've never ridden a century but after 20 years away from cycling due to knee problems I started riding again late in 2019 and during the summer/fall 2020 I was able to get out several days a week for 35-50 mile gravel rides on the county roads around me. It was a strange cognitive disconnect to be aware that as covid raged all around me I was having one of the best summers of my life.

@jabel Thank you. More than a few who have completed Ragbrai multiple times will confess they are mentally ill. They express it in a quiet, reflective tone. “Yeah…” (long pause) “There’s something wrong with me.” That’s usually on Day 4 or 5 when the hallucinations kick in. 😂

@paulcraig901 @jabel Yeah, 470 miles in 7 days. That does seem a bit bonkers. Another one that boggles my mind is the Tour Divide. 2,700 miles in 2 to 3 weeks. 😳

@Denny @jabel I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to prepare for something like that. On my recumbent trike, I could do a three-day excursion. But that would require some serious prep. Those Tour Divide folks are made of titanium and pure stubbornness.
