On the 23rd anniversary of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg writes an emotional and personal blog post about the ongoing WP Engine saga:

Silver Lake, you have already extracted all your pounds of flesh. I missed my Mom’s knee surgery. If you wanted me to suffer for my sins, I have, and probably deeper than you will ever know.

See also: from the end of 2024, my blog post about the mad king. It might hold up even better today than when I published it.

@manton That’s a troubling blog post — he doesn’t seem altogether stable. He says that IF Silver Lake win they will destroy WordPress, then he says they have already won. He doesn’t seem aware of the decisions he made that led to this situation. I’m worried for him.

@ayjay Yeah, this whole thing must’ve been very stressful and that’s coming out in his post. Reading between the lines a little, maybe this is laying the groundwork for settling the lawsuit? I doubt it’s doing anyone any good at this point.

@ayjay @manton This was my read on things too. He sounds defeated. Crying “uncle” is never a good look.

My first thought was to wonder if I should be moving away from WP.org just in case (and I’m betting I’m not the only one thinking this).

@patrickrhone @ayjay Defeated sounds right. It’s a weird juxtaposition in a way because from most accounts, WordPress 7.0 is a success. But then you have this hanging over everything.
