Big pink anvil.

A large cloud, shaped like an anvil, lit pink by the setting sun, hovers over a long mountain range.

@cliffordbeshers Aren’t @gregmoore in Michigan? Didn’t know that counted as midwestern. Nice photo by the way! Makes me want to finally watch the Anvil documentary.

@odd Oh yes, Michigan is a classic midwestern state. The term is quite weird though as it would seem to be too far north east to call it “Midwest.” I think we do because we don’t have a “Mideast” in the US.

“Hail! Hail! to Michigan, The champions of the West!” 🎵 (1898)

This always makes me smile.

Our country grew very fast.

@jean @odd @gregmoore You kind of have to use a logarithmic scale as you travel east to west in the US, scaled by the growth of the industrial revolution.

@odd Places, and nomenclature in the US are all reckoned from the east coast. It's been decades, but when driving west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike the official highway signs all said, "Ohio and the West." Pennsylvania had a vague notion that Ohio existed west of them and everything else was dismissed as "the West." :) Typical.

@bradenslen Wild West! I thought about “The West” today, and how it somehow includes Australia and New Zealand AND North America (at least). So the Midwest ought to be near the Middle East according to this.

@cliffordbeshers @jean I like the romance in the idea that I live in the northern wilds of the west.
