Another life hack.

We were at IKEA on Sunday. We have a family card via their app. Installed it as we were waiting for food. Logged in. Scanned the card for food. Got a few items, scanned it at the end... before I paid, I uninstalled the app.

Digital clutter be gone.

@Mandalorian @vincent I think it waits for a period of time before uninstalling the apps.

@Mandalorian @greghiggins - yeah, it waits too long. It doesn't work for me because the app icon is still on the phone and I have no interest in it. This is more a "use and then trash" thing I do. Plus I have very few apps actually on my phone 😬

@vincent @Mandalorian I'm interested to know the number of apps on your phone.

@greghiggins If you don't count banking apps, it's 13 right now.

@vincent wait. Does that include Apple apps or is that just 3rd party?

  • Endel
  • IKEA Home Smart
  • IVPN
  • Just Press Record
  • NetNewsWire
  • Signal
  • Waking Up
  • 1Blocker

@vincent I have literally hundreds of apps, yet I have only two of those. 🤯

@odd @vincent @greghiggins That reminds me that I'm due for a clear-out. Much like Vincent, I am fond of restricting the device to strict functionality.

@SimonWoods @vincent @greghiggins I could probably clear out some too, yet my phone doesn’t seem cluttered. A lot of the apps are in the “nice to have, just in case” category.

@greghiggins i also have a test version of Micro.blog installed, for testing and dev.

@odd @vincent I have four from the list - NetNewsWire, Signal, 1Blocker and 1Password. :)

@SimonWoods @odd @vincent I will admit that this has me rethinking some of the apps I have on my device. I'm a wee bit over that 13 number (sarcasm included)

@greghiggins I’ll allow you to add the iOS version number to your phone version number to get the maximum allowed number of third party apps (minus banking) 😜

@vincent Holy mother. I have to get this down to 29 apps? Oh wow...ok. Challenge excepted. But it might take me a few days to work through this.

@greghiggins It’s a good system and should increase by at least one every year.

@vincent That actually is a good system. And it would really force you to consider what you need versus want.

@vincent I ended up cancelling Endel and I have no idea if I miss it or not. Strange, such a lovely app but I am absolutely unsure of its effect on my productivity.

@BenSouthwood I just cancelled the renewal at the end of September for Endel. I use it very little…

@greghiggins I removed Endel, IVPN and IKEA Home smart today… two were up for renewal and I can’t spend that right now and the IKEA app I use maybe twice a year 😂

@vincent Follow up to our conversation. Six days in and I have been successful without a task manager....except for bill paying. I keep all my bills and when they're due in Reminders. So I'm still using it for that but that's it. I've turned off notifications for Reminders.

Now, as far as the apps....I've deleted around 100 but still have a ways to go.

@greghiggins Nice to hear about your task management clean-up. I think bill payments are pretty important and it's a good use for it. ... and... 100 apps? I mean WOW! That's pretty good going!

@vincent For sure. I think I may wait until I do the fresh install with iOS 16 and then start over with the process of reinstalling.
