Experimenting with OpenStreetMap. Added a new place that was missing. Thinking about how we could use this for potential location check-in support.

@manton Maybe it could be used for voluntary stated approximate location on About pages too?

@manton What do you think about vandalizing OpenStreetMap? Is it as bad as vandalizing Wikipedia? What do you suggest to evil-minded and mean-spirited people who find pleasure in impoverishing people's work?

@manton I fail to see any utility to a location awareness service. To me it smells like favorite-badges for IRL locations, similar to those of messages in a timeline. Why would anyone have that information be exposed to the public?

@belcar I’m not familiar with whether vandalism is a problem for OpenStreetMap. I guess the solution is more local experts looking at changes and maybe even platform-level curators if there is a Foursquare-like service built on it.

@renevanbelzen What I like about it is being able to look back years later at events I attended or travel. Check-ins are a kind of journal. Whether that’s public or not is a personal choice.

@manton Vandalism is definitely an issue with OpenStreetMap. There are obvious things that usually get caught quickly but there are other things that are in a gray area. What if I place a marker at my house that says, “Party Zone”? Is that vandalism? It’s a tough problem and they deal with a lot of it but not at the scale of Wikipedia.
