I wonder if the new M2 13” MacBook Pro is a good purchase for coding and writing, or if I’d better wait until fall to see if they get a M2, 15” or 16”… My eyes aren’t getting any younger.

@odd The new M2 Air seems like a much better deal. I would wait or get the Air.

@mcg Thanks for your input! I was afraid the Air is too underclocked because of the missing fans. Maybe I’ll wait.

@odd Hard to say for sure until folks review it. The M1 Air didn’t have any significant perf degradation compared to the M1 13” MBP.

@odd @odd The MBA even in its M1 form (which I have) is a terrific machine if all you want to do is code and write. The M2 should be much better, but it’s a different form-factor.

@odd I don’t know what you are coding, but if your compile times are pretty short (0-3 minutes), I bet that thermal throttling would not even kick in. That’s how the M1 is in the M1 MacBook Air. Wait for some reviews from actual coders.

@mjdescy Thanks, and good point. They don’t ship before next month I think.

@Archimage Thanks, I was worried about long compile times for a non-fan machine. You compile in Xcode, do you often have to wait long for the project to compile?

@mcg Hmm, @archimage also mentioned the MBA. I should probably wait a while to see the reviews.

@odd Compiling is never a problem speedwise. At most a couple of seconds. Usually, it takes a while to install initially. Downloads, given my internet, are slow.

@Archimage Oh, that’s good to know! I’d love to have a thin and silent machine (unlike myself 😜).

@Archimage Thank you. Very interesting! Now the question is: do I need a MBA right now, or should I wait until September and weigh my options then…

@odd if you wait, you’ll just have to wait until the next one and the next one and the next one. There is no perfect machine. Get the one that works now if you need it now. Tomorrow never comes.
