Finished reading: The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson. Discovering the Mistborn series and reading the first 3 books mostly back to back reminded me of how I felt when I was younger, reading every book I could get my hands on. 📚

@manton This Brandon Sanderson dude keeps popping up in my timeline quite often. I guess it's a sign to check his books out. Any recommendations from where I should start?

@ridwan He was new to me too until a couple months ago, but I really enjoyed starting with Mistborn: The Final Empire. He also has a YouTube video where he tries to answer exactly that question.

@manton I think I found the first of the Mistborn series free in Apple Books. I enjoyed but haven’t ponied up the money to finish the series.

@manton You're lucky finding them relatively late so that there are lots of books available. I was stuck reading them as they were written and it was torture. Once you run out you should checkout the Stormlight Archive series as well.

@ridwan solo book fave is Warkbreaker. The Mistborn trilogy @manton mentioned is really good too. The new ginormous Stormlight Archive series is a bit of a slog if you aren't familiar with the worlds already.

@ridwan One note of warning: many of the books have some allegorical tie to Latter-Day Saints/Mormonism. Just wanted you to know in case that would be a concern for you.

@msroest I was thinking about jumping to Stormlight Archive next, and then go back to Mistborn after the final book in the 2nd trilogy has been written. Does that make sense, or are they related enough that it would feel out of order?

@manton you'll be fine doing that Stormlight is separate enough, I never even realized they're supposed to all be in the same over arching universe.

@toddgrotenhuis @ridwan As a Ashkenazi Quaker atheist, I never felt the Mormon-influences to be heavy handed. I did stop reading The Stormlight Archive in the middle of book 2 but that had far more to do with my change in taste around fantasy tropes than anything to do with the writing, which was still excellent. //@manton

@toddgrotenhuis I love books that challenge my views and opinions. I don't know much about Mormonism so it could be of help.

@Bruce @toddgrotenhuis @manton I just went into a rabbit hole on Brandon Sanderson's YouTube channel. The bloke is brilliant!

@manton I think you’d be well-served to read Mistborn Era 2 first. Especially by the time you get to Rhythm of War, there are lots of things going on in the broader universe that it touches on, including things that I WILL NOT SPOIL from the end of the most recent Mistborn book.

@chriskrycho On the (side-)topic of spoilers; I can’t get the markdown for hidden text to display on Micro.Blog. There seem to be different ways to markdown this. How is(?) it handled in Micro.Blog? @help @manton

@chriskrycho Thanks! I think I’ll read the first Stormlight because I’m curious how it compares, but then go back and finish the later Mistborn series. Also have some non-fiction to read in the meantime… Plenty of books!

@odd I didn’t realize there was Markdown for that… I’ll look into it but it’s probably not supported by our current Markdown processing.

@manton Thanks! There has been a couple of times that I wish I had unseen details, so it would be great if this could be implemented in a future update.

@odd It’s not official markdown, but the example that I found is this. @manton

@manton Have you read Warbreaker, yet? I don't feel as strongly about the need to read Elantris, but many feel reading Warbreaker before The Stormlight Archive is a good plan. I don't think it's essential, though. There's really not a bad choice, because the stories are all good, and Brandon Sanderson gets better as a writer with each book.

@manton I will neither confirm nor deny reports that my bedstand currently has over a dozen non-fiction books piled up on it, at least four of which are actively in progress.📚
