I’ve been playing with Wavelength Messenger. Not to be confused with our own Micro.blog companion app for podcasts, also called Wavelength! I wish it was called something else, but ignoring that I think there’s a lot to like. John Gruber’s introduction is the best place to start.

@manton Oh that's where I knew the name from! I couldn't remember which app I'd used in the past year with that same name. You'd think a podcast nerd like me would've remembered. 😂

@iChris Heh. We haven't updated it in a year, sadly. I'd love to do more with it or maybe integrate it into the main app eventually.

@manton I’m intrigued by his article, but I have no, whoops, now one, friends on there

@manton tempted to try it myself.

@manton having to enter my phone number right from the start, no welcome text, no explanation, just nothing… is … brutal. In a world where privacy protection should not be a simple “feature” but a foundational part of the product, it’s a big misstep. It sends a weird message.

@manton I’m in now. Then what? Can we chat about Micro.blog over there?

@numericcitizen I'm not planning on creating a group for Micro.blog over there. It would be fun but based on our experience with Slack, it would inevitably be a support channel and I think email/forums is better for that.

@manton LOL. Ok. I did! 🙃

@numericcitizen @manton The description of that registration process is enough to put me off. It sounds awful. Other than "trust Gruber", why should people try this when that first impression is so bad?

@manton it seems very interesting. But I could not find how to pay. Nor how they plan on making money. I always worry nowadays with free apps / services.

@manton I reckon after we ship 3.0… we should look at Wavelength 😋

@pcora Check out @gruber's post for the overview, but basically: no ads, they'll have optional pro or organization features later.

@manton I’ve been using Wavelength for about six months now. The PDX group tried to transition our chats to Wavelength, but it has been pretty quiet over there since Telepath officially closed. I enjoyed Gruber’s post, and I’m hopeful for Wavelength’s future.

@numericcitizen what of VoIP/ Google Voice? Some apps take those (Signal) others don't. GV is on another level. OpenAI also requested phone number and didn't take VoIP.

@manton thanks. Chose it as my one article to read today. And I am testing the app. 🙂🙃

@jtr yep, got it. I'm not very "chatty" on the usual chat platforms, so for me it was like a surprise.

@numericcitizen I’m sure it will not. I’ll have trouble finding a use for this one.

@maique for me, for now, it's only an experiment. Will see where it goes.

@numericcitizen do it doesn't like VoIP not even GV. Maybe that's because of chatgpg but this sucks and a hard line for many, including me.

@manton I really like the threading, and hope this makes its way to Apple Messages. I don’t see this app sticking around for the long haul for me, but I like what they’re trying to accomplish.
