The Verge has a long article by David Pierce today about ActivityPub. The quote from me about domain names doesn’t come across quite how I intended it… Yes, domain names are hard, but we need to make them much easier to deal with because they’re actually great.

@manton I know it's maybe silly, but it's really cool to see Micro.blog on the Verge. This is such an amazing platform.

@nickkaczmarek where do you see micro.blog on the Verge? Got a link?

@ndreas It's actually an article about ActivityPub, but @manton is quoted in it and they mention that he runs Micro.blog. So really it's just the existence of the words "Micro.blog" in an article about something else, but I thought it was cool nonetheless.

Here's the link to the article though

@manton The article is decent but it seems to be written by someone who doesn't quite understand how the internet connects beyond platforms. He quotes you on domains and then rolls it right into a future platform feature WordPress is working on. It's like he's trying to describe a public library but he only understands book stores.

@nickkaczmarek Thanks! Not silly at all. I love it when Micro.blog is included in these kind of articles.

@manton it is missing the point a lot - buying the bluesky "we're solving identity" myth is another pie in the sky, by and by promise. Domains are what they're actually using, and that's fine because domains (mostly) work OK. [goes back to recovering unmung.com from the Google/GoDaddy fingerpointing spidermen]

@kevinmarks I guess the way I see Bluesky is that they aren't so much solving identity but improving how we reference an identity within social posts. Which can feel like the same thing. I'm hopeful that good things can come out of Bluesky for that reason.

@manton You weren’t joking. I read for a while but gave up before I even got to your quote.

@manton 100x yes about making domain names easier. And was great to read your thoughts here. ActivityPub has a chance… and the analogy to email’s ubiquity isn’t a bad one. Bluesky indeed has a neat solution. Also looking at Namebase/Handshake.. lots about identity and portability (not just the federation of the streams) are interesting in this space.
