@mikehaynes and Germany is the only country not able to use it for data protection reason. On the other hand... do we really need another social network?

@dominikhoecht The fact that it is not available yet in the EU says a lot more about Meta than about the EU…

@dominikhoecht It's the whole EU, not just Germany. Meta decided not to launch here at the moment, they were not forbidden.

@maique @dominikhoecht almost forbidden. their current data sharing model is illegal in GDPR. So they can't launch as is.

@mikehaynes I’m already seeing it that way now. I can understand the logic of why they did it the other way on day one.

@maique Nothing is better than that.

I just have such a deja vu with Bluesky. Then I also thought: You must have!!!! But in the end it was just.... oh, I don't know.

@dominikhoecht I get it. For me there’s a difference, I do use Instagram a lot, and the people are already there. At least those outside the EU. That makes a lot of difference.

@maique I’ve been on Instagram for nearly a decade, and having people I know I can chat with on DAY 1 is an immediate win.

@khurtwilliams Yes. Just wish I could have all the people from the country, the ones I actually know in person. Colleagues and family, they’re on one network only, and that’s Instagram.

@maique, the one thing I worked on with my Instagram was creating a list of accounts I follow who I know personally, from photo walks, meetups, and local clubs.

@pimoore Trust me, Canada is still very much first-world, so much so that people in the U.S. talk about moving to Canada whenever things seem difficult here. It's the winter that dampens everyone's spirits. But I'm sure (a lot of) white people would mind if most of third-world moves to Canada.

@pratik I suddenly “remembered” that Clinton moved to Canada to avoid the draft, but I might misremember this, (or it was rep. fake news).

@pratik Well to be fair I want to leave Southern Ontario, as summer here is atrocious. I’ll take the winter any day. 😂 To anyone wanting to move to Canada, I’d say one thing:

Bring cash. A lot. Shit’s expensive as hell here.

@pratik That was many many many centuries ago, when we were very much on the premier league, if sailing around and colonizing people could ever be considered a good thing. Anyway, it’s been downhill since then.
