@pratik In the US, low-skilled work like house cleaning and yard maintenance is highly dependent on immigration and cross-border migration. COVID made those movements of people difficult, unreliable, and expensive. Also, Americans do not want to do these jobs for cultural reasons and economic ones.

@mjdescy @pratik the UK has the same issue as immigration became a target which wound up in Brexit, there are now massive shortage in jobs that UK people "don't" want for cultural reasons, sometimes economic but I question that a little I think its more they thing they are "better" plus we have had lots of proper-gander like that "don't be a bin man be a programmer" type adverts that are basically hideous

@adamprocter you nailed the primary “cultural” reason I was thinking of.

@mjdescy Agree. But yet, those points weren't made during 2016 by politicos although there is enough evidence out there including specific examples (GA farm deciding to hire only "American" workers and then not being able to find enough people).

@pratik quick personal addendum: we reached out to other house cleaning and landscaping services and at both places, we were told they are not accepting new clients since they are at max capacity with their current staff.

@pratik I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that people are giving more importance to family, health and their mental health and are less willing to put up with shitty bosses and crushing long work hours. I mean yes, people need enough money to live off, but for me and I think many others, if you have that, the next step is a better work-life balance and not just "more money". Unfortunate that you're struggling to find someone to help with your cleaning and yard care, but at least you seem empathetic as to why.

@pratik I think another budding factor is age of the workforce - younger people (regardless of ethnicity) are less willing to do some of those jobs. The roles are generally looked down upon and lack benefits even if the pay is “good”. I believe some jobs will end up being elevated closer to professional level in order to attract employees. It’s a good thing.

@ronguest Yup. It’s a good thing. Hopefully will let employers offer more pay or make the jobs safer, better, and something that the people want to do. Otherwise get robots.

@jayeless I’m glad though that it’s people who set the terms instead of them being forced out as it has happened in the past. And yeah, we’ll survive.
