Tried twice but still can’t get Foursquare to successfully export any data. Meanwhile, the founder blogged this week that he’s left the company. I think we’re going to add check-ins back to our app Sunlit. Location was part of 1.0 (and 2.0) but was removed with the rewrite.

@manton Nice. I'd like the native option to share location here, when so moved.

Some non sequiturs: thanks for open sourcing the apps! (they're learning tools for me, as a rusty developer turned manager-and not yet a Mac dev, blemishes and all); and, not like there's any reason for it to matter but you were in my neighborhood (or adjacent) when you swung through DC. Hope you enjoyed the city. There's a lot to it, getting a mini local routine is the way to begin to see that!

@manton will you maintain a database of locations as part of that?

@mjb Cool! We loved DC and hope to be back sometime. Even after just a few days I felt like I was becoming a regular at our little coffee shop and nearby stores. 🙂

@jpayne Good question. Probably will lean on Foursquare or Apple (or Google?) for getting a list of nearby locations, and then store the check-in location with the blog post in Micro.blog.

@manton it's possible to get POIs out of OpenStreetMap with their Overpass API: wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Over... - not sure how well that works at scale, though.

@manton FYI I and many others wilfully abuse IG's location feature to essentially make puns about what we're posting (recently many of my locations were "On The Album”.. wherever that is, and people often use "Link In Bio”). Do you know what Location database FB use? I feel that it's mostly business names which constitute those “pun hacks"

@warner I think Facebook has its own location database. My guess is when you enter those location "hacks" that it only stores it with that specific check-in, but I'm not sure.

@manton oh I'd be thrilled to be able to do check-ins via Sunlit. I stopped checking in because I didn't want Foursquare ot have my data.
