Anyone else here using ProtonMail? Thoughts? Experiences? Alternatives?
@mbkriegh I had tried it out and liked it, but never enough to stick with it full-time. The lack of IMAP access bothered me (same with HEY), and it’s defining feature, namely encryption, only really works when both parties are using ProtonMail. I’m currently on FastMail and very happy with it, but will likely switch back to iCloud with custom domains once it rolls out.
@mbkriegh Not me, but my son. he's very happy with it. he tried tutanota for a while, but it had a lot of problems, hasn't had any complaints since he switched. incidentally, his main motive was mostly to get out of the googleplex (gmail) rather than the privacy features that protonmail boasts of.
@mbkriegh I have a paid proton account with my own domain as my primary email. Its as good as any other email service in my opinion, though maybe not as focused on a fast pace of iteration/feature addition (drive and calendar are being developed, but are very early). Good package deal with their VPN, which is always pretty fast for me. They also have a bridge app that allows use of desktop IMAP. The mobile apps are fine, nothing fancy. As far as encryption goes, of course an email isn't encrypted when you send it to someone who doesn't have proton (unless you want to do this cludgy "enter a password" thing), but my "threat model" is protection from ads/tracking of my own account, and a general crotchety dislike of companies who employ those techs. The zero-knowledge encryption-at-rest addresses that need for me; I can tell myself I'm exerting a modicum control over my data. I pay because I believe in paying for my services, to use a custom domain, and to subsidize the service for people who have much scarier security problems to worry about.
@JMaxB @mbkriegh De-Googling myself was a huge factor in my decision as well, so I can second this motive.
@mbkriegh I use it, and am happy with it. I'm probably not a heavy email user and don't need many fancy features, admittedly. I like the @pm.me email addresses and the fact I can have multiple email addresses arrive in the same inbox. I did had to install a "Proton Bridge" app to access my emails from the default Mail app on my Mac. Sometimes that app glitches and I have to quit it and reopen… that'd be about the extent of my problems with them. It's better than Google harvesting my emails for ad-targeting data, which is what was happening before 😛
