Looking over stats for the Mac app. 90% of users on macOS 26 or 27. 98% on Apple Silicon. Only thing I’d like to change going forward is to check for new versions a little more aggressively, so people don’t miss out on improvements. I’m not sure the 2006-era Sparkle UI is the best in 2026.

@manton i've had my own fork of sparkle for years. it's not really anything like the current version.

although i still give options to make every version a prompt and let users decide if they want to install it… that's not the default behavior anymore.

now i opt them into "automatically download and install in the background"

this downloads every new version in the background. if there's a new version fully downloaded when the user Quits the app, it will auto-install.

@manton it's less about the UI specifically as the workflow.

the new system assumes you have high-speed internet and enough disk space and that new versions won't break existing projects or add-ons.

those are assumptions that definitely weren't universal in 2010.

@isaiah Interesting. I wish I knew how many people have disabled auto checking. I think I’d rather require that but make the “new version available” prompt less annoying / modal.

@manton I was thinking of Sparkle the other day… Maybe build out our own flow.

@vincent The guts of Sparkle are still fine, but I would add a custom UI for part of it. If the UI is more streamlined, we could check for updates more often.
