Toni Schneider revealed that Bluesky is trying to make a .bsky top-level domain. Interesting strategy. Hopefully they can monetize this while keeping it open for anyone to use, like Automattic did with .blog.

@manton That seems a little weird if their branded domain name was open, no? Like anyone being able to buy a .google address

@jacky.wtf It is weird, but still feels right so someone could have their Bluesky handle and their blog at the same domain name (or at least redirect somewhere).

@manton Oh then by openness did you mean them being able to administer records with that domain? I definitely see that as a possibility.

@manton They’re kind of stuck. They do have developers, but they’re all doing writing tools without the limits bluesky has. Easiest answer – relax the rules, get rid of the limits, and you can make that work as a social net. but then they also lose their control of everything. that’s hard for them to do, esp now that a board member is the ceo. this is the kind of thing they can do without disturbing anything.

@manton Also, this matters not one bit, it’s just a name. A TLD doesn’t come with any extra powers.

@manton but it would be a way to give you an identity that’s clean and simple, so that’s nice. if they’re really into that, then please please include storage with every account. a few GB for free, and then $$$ for more. voila a business model.

@dave I like that. Paying for storage is a clear feature that users understand. I could see Bluesky offering custom domain + storage as an upgrade.
