@manton This is really cool. I am wondering about somethign similar. Is there a way to generate a link-preview for a link on micro.blog? Even if it's a third party way of just generating html? indieweb.org/link-prev...

@manton I like the idea of this a lot. I would love to see this implemented as a shortcode.

@manton Nice feature. I embedded one on my Textpattern blog here.

@michaelfransen Do you want the preview to be used on Twitter and other services, or for another purpose? It is possible to customize a blog's HTML header to include preview "card" information. It's kind of similar to this tutorial about custom favicons. (This will also be easier soon.)

@manton I love this direction. Looks great. Feedback:I am not sure what "Go to text" means. What other word besides text could be used? "Go to post", "See full post"?

|
Embed

@handy Yeah, something like that or "View post" is probably what I would do. But to start with I kept it nearly identical to Quotebacks which used "Go to text".

@manton this is pretty slick. I like that it stands out a bit more. Feels suitable for both "hey check this out" as well as long form pieces. I am guessing that the person who has been quoted will also see that show up in their mentions? In any case, really slick; and could drive some of us to discover more people who are here.

@Avancee Thanks! These don't work exactly like regular @-mentions, so the person won't get a notification. To avoid spam and confusion, longer posts don't usually show up in the Mentions tab, but I'd like to find a solution for that.

@jsonbecker That would be cool. I don't think there's currently enough control in shortcodes to get the text from the post, so that would probably still need to be pasted in.

@manton yeah I was imagining something like { < quoteback url txt > }. Would make it clean for those of us with custom themes to take advantage and also adjust some bits from the default implementation.

@jsonbecker @manton I would second that. Just tried it and it stands out a bit from the theme. Would love some way to custom theme it as well, so it would fit nicer. Also an easier way to use this feature from mobile. At the moment it’s hard to beat the Drafts action I’ve set up.

@maique @jsonbecker Thanks. The feedback has been really encouraging, so I'm leaning toward adding official support for this in all the Micro.blog apps.

@manton It’s a really neat feature, and I think it already looks nice. Inherited theme from our own would be great, yes, or a way to edit it. Available in all the apps, even better. One of my favorite things about Micro.blog is the frictionless way it allows us to post, and using this one stills requires a lot of work, and much more so on the phone.

@manton Also, and I believe you talked about this, quotes done the old way look nicer when we’re crossposting to Mastodon/Twitter. I’ve seen you stating that at the moment they look nice on the actual blog page, not so much on the timeline, but assumed it was on Micro.blog’s timeline. Just looked at the way they’re shared on those networks, and that would need some work too.

@maique Yes, they really aren't a great fit for using in microblog posts (or tweets) in their current form, because the quote is part of your post, not separate like a quoted tweet.

@manton Yes, looks odd. But, on the actual page ? Sweet 😊

@manton It's not clear whether there is an automated way to integrate Quotebacks with micro.blog. I can use it to copy Markdown to the clipboard and then past to a new post. Surely the intent is for more than that?

@jsonbecker @manton implementation of shortcodes for embed Tweets or other sources would be great; like {{< instagram BWNjjyYFxVx hidecaption >}} or {{< tweet 877500564405444608 >}}.

@paulopinto built-in shortcodes do already work, at least for me, on my site. I don't think they work in replies and possibly don't quite work in the timeline. But I use them on my site, both built in and custom!

@manton I actually wasn't thinking about other services. I was thinking if I wanted to share an article in a post and wanted to have it previewed nicely (similar to the quotebacks) on micro.blog without having to specify a quote. I realize that I could just link to the article, but sometimes if the post might be entirely about an article, it would be nice to have that article presented nicely on micro.blog and not just a text link.

@michaelfransen Oh, sorry I misunderstood. I'd like to find a way to make links more clear without doing full card previews like on other platforms, at least by default.

@manton Yeah, I don't think doing them automatically would be cool. I actually searched for a while yesterday just to see if there was a 3rd party site or app that would generate a preview and spit out the html. That for me would be ideal.

@manton Apple argues time and time again (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/36683517/spotify-accuses-apple-of-blocking-app-and-using-store-as-weapon-to-harm-competitors) that the guidelines apply equally to all apps but every one I know who has dealt with App Review knows the guidelines hardly apply equally between releases, much less every app.

So sad that they continue to completely ignore this issue.

@bjtitus Right, the inconsistencies just make everything a little worse. I think public attention on this has shifted a lot over the last year, so maybe we'll get somewhere finally.
