From Jason Snell’s review of the new Mac mini:
… at $599, the Mac mini was about as close to an impulse buy as a Mac desktop could get. At $899, it’s crossed an invisible threshold. I can understand it, but I don’t have to like it.
Maybe there’s a missing product in Apple’s lineup: a Mac with the guts of the $699 MacBook Neo. Call it a Mac nano.
@patrickrhone I was considering ordering a Mac mini last week, but I don’t really need one. Much easier to justify if it’s a couple hundred dollars cheaper. And less powerful is fine.
@manton @patrickrhone I appreciate the constraints brought on by the MB Neo (and a hypothetical mac mini neo) would bring to the software space (assuming high demand, which I don’t doubt would be the case).
@manton isn’t this the Apple TV? It was released 4 years ago with an A15 SoC. Neo has A18… so it would be reasonable for the new ATV to match (or have A19 to match next year’s Neo).
@manton Apple is a multi-billion dollar company making money hand over fist. Just price the Mac Mini at between $399-499 and call it a loss leader. No need to re-invent the wheel here; just make it cheaper and maybe just make a few million dollars less in profit.
