I sort of tuned out during the Apple Watch part of the presentation today. Catching up on Siri Recap and Live Rewind. How it works (PDF) is interesting… It’s pretty clever. Jumping through a lot of hoops for maybe not-great transcription, though.

@manton Apple already does on-device speech-to-text pretty well. The summary happens off-device. Lots of people very worried about the privacy implications but not sure what they are since it’s high-level summaries with no identification of speakers.

@jekratz In my experience with voicemail summaries, the transcript still isn’t quite good enough. For privacy, this does seem just about as secure as it could be, but people don’t trust anything that’s always listening.

@manton you’re right…voicemail is hit or miss I think but I also think that’s a harder environment in which to transcribe audio. Usually sounds like crap, volume could be low, person mumbles or speaks too quickly, etc.
