Starting to see the gold Tesla Cybercabs in Texas. I don’t plan to ride in one, but to their credit it sounds like the cameras might be better than the ones in a normal Tesla. I just don’t get stubbornly ignoring LiDAR when the technology is right there.

Of course Waymo agrees. From a Waymo blog post:

Cameras are incredible, but they aren’t enough.

Cybercabs can probably drive a little better than the average human, but not much better.

@manton I drive a Tesla and it is fantastic in self driving mode, but I completely agree. It rains a lot in Oregon. There are plenty of occasions where self driving won’t even engage because it can’t see.

@bryan While reading about this, apparently the Cybercab also has some kind of camera cleaning system, but bad weather is still bad weather. Maybe it just goes slower.

@manton I love these little camera windshield wipers on the Waymo sensor enclosures.
