Anil Dash in a follow-up reply on Bluesky after blogging about how to move away from Big AI:

People tried to shame folks out of using Instagram, out of using Uber, out of getting into crypto. How’s that going? What if, instead, we had focused on providing credible, pro-social community-based alternatives that addressed the things people thought they would get from those platforms?

He’s right that we can learn from the success of podcasting too.

@manton Well, for some of us, not using Instagram, not using Uber, not buying crypto is going perfectly well thank you. Though I admit I’m an outlier.

@ffmike I think Instagram is an interesting example. I haven’t used it in years either. I know many people distrust Meta and Mark Zuckerberg yet still use Instagram.

@manton Yeah, I don’t expect Instagram to go away (well, unless Meta gets hit with absolutely devastating losses in the current crop of lawsuits). But I don’t expect cattle-ranching to go away and I’m still vegan. I’m more into making the right choices for me than I am in forcing views on others.

@ffmike I think that’s wise. I also don’t think it’s out of the question that at least small changes will happen from these lawsuits.

@manton I think “pro-social” is the key there.

@ffmike no meta products, no cryptocurrencies - that’s me, too! I use ride sharing services as there is no decent alternative where I am, unfortunately

@manton Being anti-Uber was being anti-social, as in society. Demonstrably better service, pricing, opportunity in breaking a cartel system for millions of drivers, far higher transparency and trust/safety for riders.

That’s the problem with Dash (seemingly admitting defeat here) and the online shame brigade: wild, self-destructive overconfidence in their false higher morality.

@manton I generally find Threads quite pleasant to use, and I log in using my Instagram login. I seldom post much in Instagram these days though.
