This flow:

  1. Have a thought.
  2. Start writing a short post about it.
  3. It’s not working. Expand into a full-length blog post.
  4. Still no good. Delete the draft and copy the text into a note.
  5. Months later, pull the draft into a better blog post about a larger topic.

In other words, always write things down.

Manton with the wise words again. This is something I need to get in the habit of doing more often, so many times I think I need to write about that, start a post and then Cmd-A delete it.

@philbowell Thanks. And some discarded drafts go to notes and then never get used again. But I still like saving them if there was anything good that I might want to return to.

@philbowell I have to get better at this too. I rarely regret publishing something but I frequently regret not publishing something (not that you generally need to publish everything you write).

@lmika Yes, I know that feeling as well. I find myself wanting to write but then not writing so I know I need to not waste the times that I do start.

@ridwan How do you guys save things for later? I have stuff written in small notepads, notebooks, Apple Notes, Ulysses, Apple Pages and I am at the point of 😵‍💫
What is your workflow that works?

@philbowell One of the reasons I love Micro blog is that I can go through 1-3 seamlessly. And sometimes that’s enough! (Honestly, though. Stage 5 rarely happens for me).

@WiredDifferently @ridwan For whatever it’s worth, I’m currently eating my own dog food and using Micro.blog private notes for everything. That way I can just copy/paste from within the Mac app. Before that, used Ulysses extensively for notes and drafts.

@ChrisJWilson Thanks! Yeah, stage 5 doesn’t really happen that often for me either, but when it does I’m happy.

@ChrisJWilson I seem to be filtering myself too much and not doing 1-3 often enough despite wanting too.

@manton I’ve set Strata up again for this very reason. I’m also making more and more use of bookmarks lately.

@manton I’m actually, started it a few weeks ago, experimenting with a read later app for Micro.blog bookmarks… it’s an experiment at the moment but I’ll keep you posted.

@philbowell Sounds great! I noticed that Micro Social now has built-in tags for bookmarks like “read”, which I thought was an interesting way to track it without official API support.

@manton Are you using multiple notebooks, I imagine?

@WiredDifferently Yes, but really only a few notebooks. I have one main notebook that is pretty much all of my notes, for work and random things. Then another one that plugs into book notes in Micro.blog, and another that I’m eventually moving my private journal too.
