Sam Altman in an op-ed about safety for the Financial Times:

Democratic institutions must not cede their responsibilities to AI labs. The labs develop the technology, but citizens and their elected representatives must make the rules. The most important decisions about how this technology is used should be made through democratic processes, not by a small number of companies in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, in a twist because it’s an election year, Greg Abbott has decided he’s against data centers despite previously championing them.

@manton Curious how much Altman believes this, or hoping that government regulation might hamstring Anthropic and give Open AI opportunities.

@AnthonyBaker Maybe a little of both, but it is consistent with what he’s been saying for a while.

@manton I think about this point about policymakers abdicating their responsibilities.

We vilify Airbnb for putting a strain on housing supply but that lack of housing supply is a decadeslong issue that leaders have done jack shit to solve.

And of course, these politicians *love* using the companies as a scapegoat for exacerbating the problems they are directly responsible for.
