Ben Werdmuller has a long post about what happens now that AI coding tools actually work. There’s a lot to think about, but I’m going to pull one quote to comment on, not even central to Ben’s points:

They’re also expensive: while open source tools are decentralized and free, it’s incredibly easy to spend large amounts on Claude. Based on my own experimentation and anecdotes from friends and peer companies, any engineer that relies on Claude Code as part of their daily work is likely to spend hundreds of dollars a week…

Developers who still use Claude are burning cash. Codex is good.

@manton some of us want nothing to do with OpenAI. Some of us also use Gemini.

@manton I’m making a dumb little multi emulator (does NES and GB) with Swift and Xcode and Claude burns out SO FAST. Codex takes WAY longer to hit limits. Unless I am doing something insanely wrong. Codex also seems to understand Apple dev stuff better

@phrequencyviii Cool! I’m sure you’re not doing anything wrong. Codex limits are just more generous.

@manton @phrequencyviii doesn’t OpenAI have higher usage right now on Codex? Thought that was temporary but maybe not. Would be a good way to get some market from Claude Code.

@longcourse @manton Oh yeah, good point, they do! Claude gave out 50$ of credit as well when the new Opus hit, but yeah, it burns through fast!

@manton I cannot disagree more. Codex is really bad over here. It has trouble finding files I point it to.

@AlexKucera Wow, even with 5.3? I guess a lot depends on the type of project and maybe language.
