I wonder if any feed readers have experimented with hiding or shrinking pointless header images. For example, the big “Windows” image at the top of this post on The Verge. Because of social timelines and Open Graph, these headers are overused now.

@manton I’ve seen a few blogs that use these sorts of images at the end of the piece. Spyglass does this occasionally (although M.G. Siegler does use header images too). I sometimes wonder if that’s a better approach, sort of as a way to wrap up and accent the post.

@lmika I like that. Images can help add a feel to the post, so I get why they are used, but it’s those images that take up almost the first half of the page that really get in the way.

@manton I love seeing header images in my RSS feed. It helps me at a glance decide whether it’s worth reading or not, potentially. I’ll also read the headline but if it has an image I’ll look at that first.

Which is why I like @unread RSS feed reader app. It has support for these images. (You can also turn them off if you prefer).

Plus it has lovely themes and slick gestures. Truly one of a kind RSS feed reader.

@manton It really is unique. I like that it isn’t mailbox-like but has a paged design where you slide back and forth between pages.

And it’s silky smooth with lovely font and theme options.

I only use it on iPhone and iPad but I believe there is a Mac version too.
