Bill Gates writes about accelerating his plan to give away his wealth, winding down the Gates Foundation in 20 years:

People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that “he died rich” will not be one of them. There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people.

Funny how people change. In the 1990s, I was a teenager learning to program the Mac while complaining about Bill Gates and Microsoft. Now I admire Bill and complain about Apple.

@manton I guess Gates is like a throwback Robber Baron. A Stanford or Carnegie. After enough time passes most people won't really care what he did *for* his money… we'll just care what he did *with* his money.

@manton Pretty sure he’ll die quite rich by my standards if not by his own.

@manton Wow it’s super-duper generous to give away your money on a timeline that extends beyond your actual life expectancy. If he lives that long, he’d be 90.

This isn’t generosity. This is reputation washing.

@manton Bill Gates is part of the reason large parts of the world struggled to afford CoVID-vaccines.

His damage by using forcing his ideas of education through force of money has also damaged schooling in many cases.

And both are incredibly undemocratic oligarchy-like ways of doing things.

@ayjay Oh for sure, he and his family will be really well off even if he gives away 99%.

@ayjay @manton goes to show how ridiculous an amount even just a billion dollars are. The rich aren’t just rich these days. They are obscenely rich. They could wipe their asses every day with the wealth Rockefeller had and still not feel a noticeable drop in their wealth.

@manton wonder if that includes giving away all that land he owns.

@vanvoorden @manton Yes, let's not forget how he got that rich and that he is still in control on how it is going to be spent. (Being realistic, it has already been forgotten years ago, younger people only ever saw him in his spending role.)
