Free Our Feeds looks like a sincere effort but it’s a little vague. $30 million is a lot of money to raise via donations. I’d love to see this team communicate in more detail what they want to do.

@manton When seeing someone writing BlueSky in the project description vs Bluesky... should we worry?
@manton seems like a money grab of some sort. They want to build yet another platform outside of bluesky and mastodon that does exactly what bluesky and mastodon do.
Only thing lending it some credibility in my mind is Wikipedia and Mozilla peeps involvement.
@numericcitizen Ha, I noticed that too. I'll give them a little slack because the website was probably put together quickly. If it hasn't been fixed in a week, then we can worry. 🤪
@manton pretty sketchy. It's all open source, just start building! Anyone raising money and not just building seems like a scam. 🤷♂️
@manton I mean there’s 2 sides to this imo. It’s quite expensive atm to create a full relay - and what they’re trying to do seems to be like a whole Bluesky-infra copy & paste (without the main app ofc..) which does require funding, but def not $4 mil. I’d say $100k or so would be a good starting point
@manton I'm always a little skeptical when people who defend independence and the non-profit sector invest in a campaign aimed at maximizing profit. Whatever the promises, 30 million isn't nothing...
@jglypt.net Yes, money is needed and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm mostly just confused. I think this needs to be spelled out.
