Am I missing some critical tool for dealing with spam on the #fediverse? I've been getting spammed multiple times a day (japanese with the "DMCA" text), and I've reported it to no effect. I've ended up manually blocking the offending servers but "literally the exact same message with a half dozen mentions" feels like the sort of thing that should be automatable...

@alice_i_cecile Unlike a centralized system like Twitter it’s up to every server to deal with spam, and unless they utilize a shared spam filter (I think no such exist for Mastodon yet, for blogs there’s eg Akismet) it can be a struggle to get enough signal vs noise on smaller servers to have an impactful automatic filtering

Here on mastodon.social I have no issue with spam

@alice_i_cecile I wonder if someone like @manton would be up to launching any of the spam detection from his micro.blog as an Akismet style service for others?

Would give you more data to train your filters with @manton and more visibility in the Fediverse

@voxpelli @alice_i_cecile That sounds very interesting. I'm up for exploring something like that.

@manton Very nice! We should look into it then

Here's a related issue in Mastodon: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

That one is probably stuck in a chicken and the egg situation though – it likely won't proceed unless there's something to hook into

Here's two older threads on the topic:
