Think I figured out my high bounce and complaint rate for email sending. Spammers are trying to (probably accidentally) sign up to customer’s newsletters with fake email addresses. Working on making it harder for bots to navigate this.

@manton I think I saw this happening to the newsletter signup on my site and I suspected spam or some sort of abuse, but I really couldn’t figure out how they’d benefit from this. Doing it accidentally would make a lot more sense, haha.

@dfj Yeah, there's no advantage for them. They're just making the web a little worse for no reason. 🙁

@manton Those bots try to do comment spamming - seen that a lot. I would think of two options:

1) Add some "honey-pot" fields that are hidden for bots, but which bots do like to fill in. 2) Add a confirm email to your newsletter.

The latter will reduce the bounce rate to a single email.

@manton I've been having a high level of bot signups for my Dejal newsletter recently (powered by MailChimp, so I'd expect better filtering from them).
