I hope other apps – no matter if photo related or not – join the path like @halidecamera, sooner than later

In a future update to Halide, we’re removing location data from photos you share to Facebook or Instagram.

@renem Micro.blog for iOS now strips the location and other metadata from photos before uploading too. It's easy to overlook but really important.

@manton I was glad to discover that (it was one of my worries before I posted my first photo, so I picked one I didn’t really care if the location stayed); generally speaking, I’d “like” an informed choice, but in the absence of one, I’m glad you defaulted to the correct behavior :-)

Related-ish question: why does the iOS app strip the ICC profile from the in-app/square photos when it does not do so for the shared/original-aspect photos? I figured the behavior would be consistent between them (and appreciate the embedded profile keeping colors consistent across devices/platforms/etc).

@smokey It should be consistent even from shared, non-cropped photos, although it wasn't in previous versions. If it's not working we'll want to fix that.

@manton Hmm, I didn’t quite state the problem right (I didn’t understand it correctly at first until I looked more closely), but there is still a difference: the shared/non-cropped photos are tagged (ExifIFD:ColorSpace) with the sRGB color space (ICC profile itself is stripped, but the color space info remains, leading pretty much everything to treat it as sRGB, as it should be), whereas the in-app/cropped images have neither ICC profile nor the sRGB color space tag (both are stripped, leading to inconsistent treatment across apps/platforms, sometimes as sRGB and sometimes as plain RGB).

From my perspective, it would be nice if the color space tag could remain in the in-app/cropped images so that everything the app emits behaved the same and could still be understood as sRGB the world over, but I don’t know if that’s possible :-)

@manton thanks for the info. Didn’t knew that it was stripped and it’s the right decision!

@smokey Got it, thanks for the explanation. I agree with you. Would be nice to be more selective about what is cleared in the metadata.
