I took the demo portion from yesterday’s panel and uploaded it to YouTube as a separate 6-minute video clip. This shows the new replies curation and reply text box features.

@manton It’s a great feature. BTW I really enjoyed yesterday’s events. I wish I could have stuck around for the happy hour.

@manton Love the new features. Minor quibble - when I sign in with Micro.blog, it opens a new window but refreshing the older one doesn't show me signed in. Is that intentional?

@manton that’s excellent. Both features work on my blog already :)

@pratik Nope, what browser? It's not opening a new window for me.

@manton Arc. Never mind. It might be Arc-specific. Worked in the same window on Safari. I'm guessing this feature is for non-Micro.blog visitors to your blog. Ones on Micro.blog are better off using the 'Reply on Micro.blog' plugin button.

@pratik I don't necessarily agree (though no idea about Arc). In Firefox, it basically just did a fast page reload with no pop up/under/tab stuff and was very easy to add a comment. If I'm on your site already, it's significantly less disruptive than the Reply on Micro.blog button.

@jsonbecker you do have to type out the person's handle manually, right?

@pratik I made the previous reply from your site without typing your name.

@jsonbecker This one? Yes, that's what I meant. But if you are replying to people who have commented on posts on your blog then you have to type out their name. Or if you are replying to someone other than the author on a post on their blog.

@pratik ah. This gets at exactly what I think Manton was getting at about not doing threaded comments. I very rarely comment on comments, and even this response makes more sense from the app because how else would I know you replied? Comments here are “nerfed” in a way that makes sense given resources and goals (i.e. disincentivizes other people having long back and forth on your own site)

@manton Great feature, thank you. I'm looking forward to implementing it on my own site.

@jsonbecker I see that hence my original comment about this feature being for people who land on my blog/site from a non-Micro.blog source. I don't mind the 'Sign in with Micro.blog' to evangelize Micro.blog although I hope that onboarding process is better. Sign in with Mastodon/Bluesky may look familiar so that's great.

I disagree about not commenting on comments. I or someone will want to at least respond to a comment. Only One level threading would suffice and prevent people from arguing ad nauseum on your post and if they still chose to, it will be distinct enough to know what that thead was. But then again, I understand the need to keep it simple.

@manton Thank you for the new commenting form. Not having commenting is something that has been really bothering me for a long time. I think it is an elegant first step for addressing the issue. So, thanks again.

Also, nice explanation in your video.

@manton I’m excited for this!! Does it have to be a particular protocol for sign in? Curious about the criteria there. Sign in with Gmail / Instagram (for example) to verify could be useful for typical* social media folk, eg my friends! 😅 (*My tone here is not at all condescending!!)

@sim0ne Thanks! We could add more services, although it will work best for identities that have a profile on the web. Instagram (via Threads) might be possible later.
