24 years ago, Traci and I went to Europe with a rail pass and hardly any money or plans. We worked remotely: her as a contractor for Apple and me at a small Mac dev shop. Last week I rediscovered some emails and postcards we sent while traveling and I decided to put them together as a web page.
@manton Very interesting read, thank you for putting it all together and posting it. You’ve actually seen more of Europe than I it seem(!) One question, was Scully the dog called up after Dana Scully?
@manton This is so cool. Are these emails you sent to family and friends when traveling? It's almost travelogue type. I sense a hardcopy book here for your kids 😀
@jemostrom We were able to negotiate a discount on the phone bill. Can't remember how much but got it down to something manageable.
@pratik Yeah, it kind of reads like a personal blog to me now, even though it wasn't meant to be public.
@manton 👍🏻 during my first trip to the US (-92) I remember being utterly confused about the phones. I wanted to call home, picked up the phone, inserted a coin and an operator answered. I asked if I could make a collect call and got the answer "no, we can't do that". I put down the phone, looked at how much money I had and thought that it would be enough for a 5 sec call home 😁, enough to say when I was coming home. I inserted the money, started to dial the number and an operator answered, I said what I was trying to do and the operator said "no problem, we can do a collect call"
I just stared at the handset "but ... but ... it was impossible 60 seconds ago". I was utterly confused.
@manton ~40 years ago my wife & I moved to Switzerland for 5 years, driving across the continent from Trondheim to Gibraltar whenever we had a vacation. Now digitizing our film from those vacations, amazing photos we never saw before now 🙂
