Taking the train up to Dallas tomorrow for a quick 24-hour trip. Initially was trying to save money in coach, but just upgraded to a roomette so I can more easily work and enjoy the trip. Hope when Brightline is finished with the Vegas line they can expand to Texas. 🚂

@manton There’s few better ways to travel than in a nice car on a train. The trip itself can become relaxing and even productive. Have fun!

@Gte Thanks! I would take the train everywhere if I could. But Texas likes its highways. (We did New York → Montreal once, one of the Çingleton years... Related bucket list: Vancouver to Toronto.)

@manton My Mum and sister did a Montreal to Vancouver trip years ago and loved it. I’ve gone from Vancouver to Portland and that ride is truly beautiful and maybe easier to find an excuse to do one day.

@Gte @manton — I did that Vancouver to Portland train ride too many years ago. It was lovely.

@Gte @manton Acela from NYC to Philly was good too. It is mind-boggling how the US chose _not_ to be a world-leader in train networks, when a decent high-speed rail network could do NYC-SF in what, around ~15 hours.

@paulca @manton I’ve done that trip and enjoyed it. High speed rail in North America generally is a sore spot. Wish we’d get our act together. Still, along the corridors with decent service it remains a wonderful way to travel and see the country.

@Gte @manton — You could almost be describing Ireland. If Ireland had high-speed rail, you'd be able to get from anywhere to anywhere else within 90 minutes. No vision to invest alas.

But yes, train is a fantastic way to travel. Other routes I'd recommend if you ever get the chance: Dublin–London by boat and train, just for the experience, and also the London-Edinburgh sleeper, and of course London to Paris or Brussels under the English channel in 2 hours.

@paulca @Gte Bernina Express looks incredible. Ages ago we had a 2-month rail pass in Europe so got to see a lot, but still feel like only scratched the surface.
