I’m reading the micro.blog book (thanks @manton !) and it shows a fascinating side of the web that i was unaware of. We’re wasting so much by giving up our content.
And that made me think, it seems like meany have learned their lesson with #TwitterMigration but why is nobody talking about the websites that do the same with longer form content?

@alexito4 Thanks! It’s a good question. Obviously I think Micro.blog is a nice solution for both short-form and longer posts, but it will be great for the web if more people who are embracing Mastodon also start a full blog at their own domain name, no matter what platform they use for it.

@a2 @alexito4 Yep, it’s just book.micro.blog. I’m also working on some editing that I’ll publish at the beginning of January.

@manton Looks great, will try to peruse tomorrow. Appreciate it!

I see these micro.blog now participates in ActivityPub, very cool! Are there any write-ups on why micro.blog may make sense vs. a single-instance Mastodon instance?

@a2 I don’t think there’s a good write-up on that, but we should work on one… We need to do a better job of documenting how Mastodon and Micro.blog are compatible, but also the differences. My 2 cents: Micro.blog can host ActivityPub for you at a custom domain name, so it’s a good choice if you don’t want to run your own server, but the features don’t 100% align so it’s a personal preference too.

@manton the downside of that is that the blog doesn’t exist on the same post feed. I don’t think?

I think micro.blog has the right idea making blog posts and status posts all part of the same identity and feed. Though I’d personally dearly love to use it via a Mastodon app with all the associated features like boosts etc. partly because I like those feature and partly to take advantage of all the great apps springing up. 😬

@ryanbooker Support for more apps is something I hope we can explore. We’re not going to add boosts, though.

@manton I’m glad to hear there won’t be boosts. I don’t find that I miss them here.

@jdm Glad to hear you like it. I think boosts (or Twitter retweets) have a couple problems and we haven’t missed them. Manually reblogging something with copy/paste of a quote or embed still works to share something, just takes a little more thought.

@manton I agree. Slowing down and thinking about why something deserves attention on my personal website is a great feature.
