Interesting to read that a web version of Day One is progressing. What will happen sooner: Day One becomes a great web publishing tool, or Micro.blog becomes a great private journal? (Only half joking… I know how I want this to work but have to resist until we’re ready.)

@manton When I make a post I'd love the choice of blog only, blog & timeline, or timeline only. And the option of making the blog private. Maybe I can do that already and don't know it?

@jasonekratz I accept the challenge. 🙂 Seriously though, it will be a while… Everything we do is centered around public blogs by design, so anything private has to be treated especially carefully.

@JMaxB Nope, there's no way currently. The closest thing you can do is a semi-private blog that is on the web but not indexed and not easily discoverable. That is how I handle my own family's blog.

@manton I hadn't even thought of DayOne as a competitor to Micro.blog. By design, as long as prying eyes of the search engines are kept away, I consider my MB blogs public. I want to be open with the people on here but not with the entire Internet. DayOne, for me, is for my eyes only.

@pratik Yeah, I don't consider Day One competition either. But I am curious about anything web-related they do because of the Automattic acquisition.

@jasonekratz I expect that's their goal. It's probably more about Windows access than anything else.

@manton FWIW, I kind of read the thrust of such a move more in the interest of a cross-platform offering than that of a bonafide blogging tool.

@manton @jasonekratz to be fair, Day one had web publishing and then removed it. In the years since, they've never really pushed to bring it back. And if I were automattic, I'd probably just encourage sharing to tumblr or WordPress rather than build a dedicated product...but then again, Day One did have a publishing tool before so who's to say they won't see the value again?

@patrickrhone Oh definitely. Just makes me think a little about the potential, and how many writing tools have embraced web publishing.

@manton I would love to see Micro.Blog figure out how to do the publishing aspect of Day One. It would be cool to select a window of dates, press buy and have that section of my blog come in a nice printed book.

@timapple We do have a Day One import from Micro.blog for macOS. File → Export → Day One. That will bring in blog posts and photos too.

@jasonekratz Here's some old info on it. It was a nice service but I'd say microblog is better for what it wanted to be.

@pratik I want to keep those worlds as far apart as possible just so I don't inadvertently publish a private post.

@manton @jasonekratz I suppose a private blog would be contrary to the open web philosophy micro∙blog seems to embrace. Even so, with the new passkey technology a private blog should be easier to access for non-technical users, even easier than the cookie-via-email method micro∙blog currently uses as an alternative to passwords. Passwords and especially password recovery are a pain to deal with, password breaches a real (marketing) nightmare.

@JoeCotellese I still struggle keeping my two Micro.blog blogs separate. Coz one is known to my real-life friends/colleagues and other is not.

@manton Here's hoping that web-app also includes a web API. As fun as it is importing blog posts using a CLI tool, having something a bit more feature rich that doesn't require opening the Terminal would be nice.

@timapple Ooh, I’d be interested in a service like that as well. Making books with Day One is the main reason why I import all my blog posts there.
