On a recent CoreInt @danielpunkass riffed on Mars Edit 5.

@manton raised iOS towards the end of the show.

I was thinking iOS as soon as I heard V5.

I think not offering an iOS solution when Mars Edit 5 gets released would be crazy.

What do you all think?

@JohnPhilpin @danielpunkass having an iOS version would be very nice. Having an iOS version + macOS version that synced would be excellent. Syncing iOS + macOS and the ability to publish to a git repo (i.e. disk and something like WorkingCopy) would be truly excellent. However, I don't expect or hope for that. But I'm 100% sure that I will be very satisfied with whatever v5 will bring.

@jemostrom

Well in fairness I am very happy with V4 … I’m just thinking of opportunity for @danielpunkass

@JohnPhilpin I don't speak for @danielpunkass but personally I wouldn't hold up the Mac version. Better to ship 5.0 when it's done and then follow up with iOS later, because iOS is its own big project that will probably take a while to get right.

@JohnPhilpin He's going to do what he's going to do... but I'd say as a user and a product manager, I'm not really sure how the effort after 4.0 got out the door wasn't "bug fixes only until an iOS version exists". I think it's been a big business mistake (alongside not adopting some additional APIs that have since become available, like Ghost). But I don't run Red Sweater, I just am a user that wants Daniel to make more money.

@jsonbecker thanks for the input. You’re probably right about some of that but I also think it’s not a clear cut win for making lots of money with a blogging app, no matter which systems or platforms I support.

@danielpunkass lol didn’t really want to direct @ you because I know you don’t need to hear it or get unsolicited advice. I just know I’d love an iOS version personally. Still a happy v4 customer that bought direct and uses the SetApp version to try and maximize your return on MarsEdit because it’s great!

@jsonbecker It’s cool I do appreciate the thinking! I wish it were more obvious that branching out to iOS was a money-making move. I think most Mac developers I know and respect have found it ultimately disappointing, though I’m sure there’s a way to do it right and make money.

@danielpunkass my gut is with an app focused on writing it’s a little different— not so much that the iOS app directly makes a ton of money, but more that a lot of users expect it to exist and won’t consider MarsEdit without it.

@jsonbecker @danielpunkass As someone without a Mac at home, I can assure you there are those of us that aren’t avoiding MarsEdit for any reason other than we can’t run it (yet?). 😉

@danielpunkass Support publish to Notion. Release an overly complex Notion template for "blogging." Do some Youtubbing. Riches!

I'll show myself out...

@danielpunkass That’s a really important question. Maybe PCalc developer James Thomson would have some insight on what it takes to make a successful (ie enough revenue to support a developer & overheads) iOS app? He certainly seems approachable (esp. to someone of your stature in the community).

@manton The changes since 4.0 and now are probably significant, (I forget), and a couple of minor-version features added, more than justifies a 5.0 in my book. In the end the creator should be allowed to do what (s)he wants. If some don’t think there is enough, then they can wait until 5.1 or 5.2. @danielpunkass
