I’ve read too many articles about the accident with Alec Baldwin’s gun firing on the Rust set, like this new one in The New York Times, and I still don’t get it. Prosecutors really don’t have anything else to do? It’s a tragedy, but I’m not losing sleep that Alec is out there running free.

@manton it seems like it’s become someone’s pet project to put him in jail and there’s just enough of something out there to make it happen regardless of it’s justified or not.

@manton attorneys I know say it’s highly unusual, and I find it hard to believe there isn’t a political motive. Maybe just an easy way to look tough on crime before the next election cycle.

@kern @manton I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone who was butt hurt by all the Donald Trump impressions.

@manton reports after this incident seemed to indicate a film where people were stretched thin to the point that there were lapses in safety best practices.

In that sense, it’s possible he might have some legal culpability not because he was the one holding the gun, but because he was a producer on the film and didn’t instill a culture of safety above all.

But the obsession over the trigger pulling that recent articles discuss feels like splitting hairs and not worth prosecuting over.

@manton We hear a lot about Alec Baldwin but nothing about the film's armorer, a 24-year old with only one prior film as experience in the role. She was also scolded a week earlier for leaving unattended shotguns on set. Working conditions were said to be dreadful. Source.

@manton I agree. But as someone who grew up with guns (dad was a former Marine and taught me how to shoot at a young age) I don’t think I could ever work with guns if I was an actor. I have an aversion to guns pointed at me, even if they’re just on display or even ones on a TV or movie screen! And I would NEVER point a gun at a person unless I intended to actually shoot them (being a bit of a pacifist, that would have to be an extreme situation).

I don’t get the effort to pursue him like this.

@manton i guess the idea is to push for producers to spend the money required to ensure safety??? on shoestring budgets mistakes are obviously being made.

but…

i’m totally with you. making an example out of someone that doesn’t really seem like a murderer is probably not going to create the change they’re after but just piss off a lot of people and enrich a bunch of lawyers.

@isaiah Right. And apparently the safety guidelines have already been updated because of this.
