Found some old postcards and emails we sent from Europe in 1999 and they are absolute gold. May try to put some of them online as an archive if I get permission from @traci. Here’s a highlight from traveling before wi-fi existed:

We won’t be connecting the PowerBook to the Internet again until we get to the next city, probably, but we should be checking email the rest of the week anyway. There’s a restaurant here that gives free Internet access when you order a dinner, which should be nice if it’s true.

@manton My mom saved all the postcards I sent when traveling through Europe in 1987. I only did bare bones journaling so these are wonderful for me.

@manton I remember those days! We did an ~8 month trip around continental US in a converted city bus in ‘97 before wifi and I used an acoustic coupler on pay phones from a folding camping chair to get email and upload builds from my PowerBook 3400c :)

Many pay phones had bad speakers or microphones so I often had to try multiple phones in a row of pay phones to find one that would hold a fast enough connection.
